Shocking footage taken from the dashcam of an Aussie car shows the moment a motorist made an “embarrassing, costly” mistake at a major intersection.
Video of the crash was shared to social media on Friday, igniting a torrent of criticism in the comment section from viewers who blamed the dashcam-owner for poor judgement.
The footage begins with a beige four-wheel-drive navigating a basic intersection and driving down some quiet roads just after 11pm. Noticeably, there is a phone dial-tone ringing in the background.
The call ends after it goes to voicemail, the change marked by the abrupt sound of music playing.
At this point, keen-eyed viewers can see the car heading in the direction of an intersection, where yellow “prepare to stop” signs are flashing on both sides of the road.
As the car inches closer, the traffic light turns red but the car shows no signs of slowing down.
A few seconds later, as the car is just metres away from the red light, the music pauses but the 4WD runs straight through and smashes into an oncoming car.
The crash resulted in both cars being write-offs, though the other driver emerged “fine” with “no injuries,” according to the video’s caption.
However, that outcome didn’t stop commenters from ripping into the 4WD driver.
One person said: “Maybe focus less on making phone calls and playing with the radio and more on the driving part of driving.”
Another joked: “The lights went red three business days before he arrived at the intersection and they emailed him three times to tell him they were red. Still missed it.”
Others thought the incident should have cost the driver their licence.
“If you missed the red light maybe it’s time to stop driving for everyone else’s safety,” one person wrote.
“Specsavers is having Boxing Day specials. Please go directly there. But do stop in at the police station to hand your licence in,” another said.
The NSW government last month urged drivers to take extra care when on the road during the holidays.
“Stick to the speed limit, never drive if you’re affected by drugs or alcohol, make sure you’re well rested before hitting the road, always wear your seatbelt, wear a helmet if you’re riding a motorcycle and don’t use your phone illegally,” NSW regional transport and roads minister Jenny Aitchison said.
