Shocking footage taken from the helmet camera of an Aussie motorcyclist captured the moment a turning car wiped the rider out at more than 75km/h.
Video of the crash along the Great Western Highway in Sydney was shared to social media last week, sparking debate among commenters around who was at fault for the high-speed collision.
The footage shows the motorcyclist riding in the left hand bus lane at about 75km/h, when a white Toyota hatchback turns from the middle lane to the driveway of an apartment building. It’s unclear from the video whether the driver of the car used his indicator before turning.
Unable to stop, the rider collides with the front left of the hatchback, sending debris and the rider flying onto the bitumen. However according to the caption the rider was actually fairly lucky not to be more seriously hurt.
“This happened back in August on the Great Western Highway and was relatively unharmed and was walking less than a week later,” it read.
The video was uploaded to the infamous ‘Dash Cam Owners Australia’ Facebook page, where drivers share dashcam footage of collisions, reckless driving and everything in between.
Characteristic of the page, the comments section was divided on who was at fault, with some arguing the rider put himself in a dangerous position and could have easily avoided the collision.
“Very poor driving and riding, you should be prepared for that sorta stuff to happen, slow down, maybe take a defensive driving course,” one user said.
Another commenter cited the NSW Road Rules 2014, which states that the driver of motorbike may use bus lanes that are not bus only lanes.
Additionally vehicles under 7.5 metres and not displaying a do not overtake turning vehicle sign must turn left from the leftmost lane.
“Therefore, the car was legally required to use the leftmost lane – in this case, the bus lane – to turn, not from the second lane,” he said.
“Please get your legal facts straight before casting (sic) fault.”
The release of the footage followed a statement from the NSW government earlier this month urging motorists to stay safe on the roads over Christmas and New Year holidays.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison urged drivers to stick to the speed limit and take extra care before driving over the holiday period
“We want people to have a safe and happy holiday. Tragically, as of midnight on 17 December 2024, 330 people have lost their lives on NSW roads so far this year which is one less than the same time last year,” she said.
“So, I’m asking everyone to please slow down and take extra care on our roads to make sure this is a merry Christmas.”
