A four-year-old boy with autism is fighting for life after being struck by a car in an alleged hit-and-run near the New South Wales – Victorian border.
Dakiri, who has autism and is non-verbal, suffered serious injures after he was hit by a car on Dick Road, in Lavington, near Albury, at 7am on Friday.
Police allege the vehicle fled the scene after the collision, for which no one has yet been charged.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and treated the young boy for a suspected head injury, before he was taken to Albury Hospital for further treatment.
He was later flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where he remains.
Family friend, Fiona Kane, has launched a GoFundMe to raise money for Dakiri’s mother, Ricki Hullick, who is staying in Melbourne while her son continues to receive treatment.
“I have started a fundraising page for Ricki Hullick and her beautiful family while dealing with a horrific accident to Dakiri,” she wrote on the fundraiser, before describing Dakiri as a “beautiful young boy”.
So far, over $2,000 has been raised at the time of publication.
“Ricki and family will have to stay in Melbourne for some time and I’m asking if anyone can please help. Costs associated are accommodation, food, fuel and general cost of living as she will still need to pay bills.”
Police are investigating the incident and seized a repainted Holden Commodore on Saturday.
“Officers attached to Riverina Crash Investigation Unit and Albury detectives – with ongoing assistance from Victoria Police – have seized a Holden utility in Wodonga, yesterday, as part of an investigation into a hit-and-run in Albury, on Friday,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The vehicle will undergo forensic examination; however, no arrests have been made over the incident.”
The vehicle is believed to have been fitted with fake Victorian registration plates, ABC News reports.
The front passenger side of the car had also reportedly been damaged.
Police earlier appealed for dashcam footage of a white ute seen travelling between Racecourse Road and The Hume Highway at Lavington, as well as Guinea and McCauley streets, Albury, between 7am and 7.15am on Friday.
Those with dashcam footage were urged to call local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
