An intersection on the Gold Coast has been named in the top three worst spots for serious crashes in Queensland — but it gets worse.

Today RACQ revealed some of the state’s worst intersections, with the Gold Coast Highway and Clifford Street, Surfers Paradise intersection coming in third.

It’s the second time in a row it has made the top three.

In a top 10 list however, the Southport-Nerang Road and Currumburra Road intersection at Southport was also named, coming in fourth.

Slightly further out, the Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Mundoolun Connection Road in Tamborine came in 10th.

Using data from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, RACQ spokeswoman Lucinda Ross said the majority of the problem spots had high traffic volumes at peak times.

She said it was riskier for motorists, leaving them more susceptible to crashes.

“We’re seeing more crashes in these areas as they’re extremely busy and are often

congested, creating extra issues for drivers to navigate,” Ms Ross said.

She said the big problem plaguing the Surfers Paradise intersection in particular was failing to give way correctly.

More than 30,000 insurance crash claims were received by RACQ in the past year.

Ms Ross called on all levels of government to “commit to road and intersection upgrades to

relieve congestion, reduce crashes and provide alternative corridors to reduce traffic.”

Queensland’s worst intersection named by the RACQ was in Brisbane, on the corner of Kedron Park and Lutwyche Roads at Kedron.

Number two on the list was Mt Lindesay Highway and Greenbank Road in North Maclean.

Ms Ross advised motorists to obey the road rules “so you get where you’re going without putting yourself or others at risk.”
