AN intersection in the city’s most famous suburb has been revealed as the Gold Coast’s worst crash hotspot, according to new data.
Figures on crash frequency released by RACQ reveal the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Clifford Street in central Surfers Paradise was the city’s worst crash hotspot and the second most dangerous in the entire state.
WORST TIME TO DRIVE ON GOLD COAST ROADS REVEALED
Rounding out the city’s top three were Varsity Lakes Scottsdale Drive and Baywater Ave and the M1 off-ramp at Movie World in Oxenford.
RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael said she was concerned about the Surfers Paradise intersection.
“Twenty people have been seriously hurt at this intersection, mainly because drivers aren’t giving way properly,” Dr Michael said.
THE WORST TIME TO DRIVE ON THE M1
“The introduction of a fully controlled right turn, so drivers only turned on green, would go a long way reducing the number of serious crashes.”
Dr Michael called on all levels of governments to research why these crashes had occurred so frequently and said funding should be allocated to make the intersections safer.
“We’re asking our politicians to come to the table — at a federal, state and local level they need to step up their game,” she said.
WHY THE M1 IS COAST’S KILLER ROAD
“While the Blackspot Program has been successful in reducing the number of serious crashes in troublesome intersections, continued investment is needed for safer roads.”
