Teen jumps on the back of a Harley after battling brain cancer to raise money for Childhood Cancer Support in the annual Ride For Love

AFTER a number of death-defying feats this young teen has endured during a two-year brain cancer battle, riding on the back of a Harley around the Hinterland will be a walk in the park. Here is her courageous story.

WHILE most of Brooke Kaluzyn’s friends were enjoying sport, going to school and the movies, the Benowa State High School student was battling multiple brain tumours and gruelling rounds of chemotherapy.

“I’d been sitting in hospitals for so long I just wanted to get back to my friends,” the Ashmore teen said.

Today, the 14-year-old has achieved that.

After almost two years of surgeries, hospital stays, chemo and radiation therapy, Brooke is finally in remission.

“She had a six centimetre tumour underneath the base of her brain and had two surgeries, the first one was to remove the main tumour and a few weeks later a second tumour had to be removed as it was starting to regrow,” said Brooke’s father, Nick Kaluzyn.

“It was a very scary time for the family.

“That was in October 2016 and then we started radiation at Christmas time.

“That went through to March 2017 and, after a break of four weeks, then started intense chemo right through to July.

“Childhood Cancer Support provided us place to stay because we have four kids so we took the other three kids out of school and they went up the hospital school at the Lady Cilento Hospital, so that took the pressure off as far as that was concerned.

“We are so grateful they have that service.”
