Swim with whales on this bucket-list beach break a short drive from the Gold Coast

In the latest instalment of our Gold Coast Getaways series, find out how you can come face-to-face with a whale on this bucket-list beach break. SEE THE VIDEOS

From swimming with whales to box seats on the beachfront, in the latest instalment of our Gold Coast Getaways series, find out how to get front row for the event of the season.

WHILE Gold Coasters are privileged to live on the humpback highway, we need to visit our northern neighbours for a really close encounter.

Sunreef Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast runs Australia’s first swim with humpbacks experience.

I’ve been whale-watching many times but couldn’t resist the chance to meet these giants of the deep in their element.

Setting out early from the upgraded wharf precinct, our wetsuit-wrapped entourage is coached to watch for telltale splashes, blows and breaches.

It can feel a bit like spotting a needle in a big, blue haystack, but the numbers are on our side.

Sunreef Mooloolaba owner Dan Hart says researchers are predicting the number of humpbacks cruising up our east coast will continue to increase.

“This year will see an expected 35,000 humpback whales migrate through Sunshine Coast waters,” he says.

Dolphins slicing through the swell draw our eyes to a pod of three humpbacks.

What happens next is completely on their terms. The crew judge whether it’s safe to slide into the water, leading the way to a viewing point and allowing the gentle giants to instigate any interaction.

While COVID-19 means fewer people on each of Sunreef’s excursion and a more intimate experience, the whales haven’t got the memo about social distancing.

Guide Jonny Fell is still reeling from one very special encounter with an adult female who came within 10cm of entranced swimmers.

“As soon as we got in the water, she came straight over to us and the adventure truly began,” he says.

“She would swim underneath and turn, looking straight at us.

“The whale was so close, you could see her blinking at us. It was just incredible.”

Continue the close encounter theme by booking box seats on the beachfront.

The modern, very spacious apartments at Oceans Mooloolaba boast the best ocean views on the main strip.

Their open-plan design means you can gaze at the big blue from the balcony, the bed or even the freestanding tub.

Oceans is also a short stroll from some of the best dining options, including the iconic Surf Club Mooloolaba.

The club’s prime second-level space, usually saved for weddings and special occasions, is operating as Bayview Bar and Bites Restaurant while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

Sit down to a seafood platter or bucket of fresh Mooloolaba prawns while you watch the trawlers come in.

Sunreef’s swim with whales season runs until October 18, but if you miss that window you can still head out on a whale-watching adventure until November 1.
