A surfing injury and a hospital visit five years ago was the start of an adventure-filled love story for Gold Coast actor George Pullar and Charlie Francis.

The Tugun couple celebrated their wedding with a joy-filled party bursting with love, fun and music on May 3 at Fins at Plantation House in Kingscliff, on the north coast of NSW, in front of 118 guests.

Charlie and George, who starred in Playing for Keeps and Home and Away, wowed the crowd with their choreographed first dance to Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel. Another highlight for guests was when George’s Lions-mad mum started up the AFL club’s chant mid reception.

How did you meet? Charlie: We first met, very briefly, on the side of a football game through George’s twin sister, Annie. Two years later (2020) we met again at John Flynn Hospital. George had a bacterial infection in his foot from a reef cut while surfing and I worked at the hospital (in a cardiac clinic). It was during covid so George wasn’t allowed any visitors. He contacted me to ask if I wanted to stop by for a visit after work. We just remember talking for hours and how effortless it was. We both knew it was the start of something special.

The proposal? George: It was a rainy Friday afternoon on the Gold Coast, but I had arranged post-engagement celebrations I couldn’t back out of and decided today was the day: rain, hail or shine. We set off for our typical Friday arvo beach walk at Tugun. Finally, I saw a rainbow creeping out and thought this couldn’t be any more perfect. Charlie was truly taken by surprise. That was my goal, to make sure she never saw it coming.

Hen’s night? The ultimate girls’ day – started with a swim and coffee, pilates class at Soul Athletic Studio in Tugun, followed by an amazing lunch at a beachfront house hosted by Harvey and Co (Brisbane events/catering company – Gretel Harvey is an old friend). It involved fun games, drinking, dancing and a guest appearance by Beverley Kills (Drag Queen).

Buck’s night? My brother Harry booked an Airbnb at Cabarita and invited all of my mates down for a long weekend of beach-related activities, plenty of drinking and humiliation for the buck.

First dance song? The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson. We had choreographed lessons with JoJo Dance instructor (Mojo dance studio).

How did you choose your wedding venue? Fins Plantation House was the first and only venue we checked. We both remember arriving and turning to each other after about two minutes and just smiling. Without even saying it, we both knew, this was it. We wanted a wedding location that felt remote and intimate but was also not too far from guest accommodation.

What would you spend more or less on? We truly wouldn’t change a thing, but we did make the decision early on in our wedding preparation that if we were going to splurge on anything it would be the band. And that turned out to be a great call. We wanted an epic dance floor and we got one.

How did you choose your wedding outfit? This was the first dress I ever put on! My sister Abbey had come across Bo and Luca on Instagram. The Poppy gown was the first thing I ever tried on. I instantly fell in love with the intricate detail and boho feel of the gown. I wanted a fun party dress for the dance floor. I saw the Rachel Gilbert Cynthia mini and that was it!

What was the most stressful part of wedding planning? Seating plan!

Any unique details? George’s sisters Annie and Lulu were the MCs, the entire reception was a performance/comedy act.

What was the most meaningful part of your vows? How similar they turned out to be!

Did anything unexpected happen? George’s mum Bec, an avid Lions fan, managed to get the entire wedding upstanding chanting the Brisbane Lion’s anthem during the reception.

Were there any standout moments from the speeches? All of the speeches were incredible, it was common feedback we got from the day! Both dads were great. David (Charlie’s dad) was deservedly celebrating this being his last daughter wedding, after getting through four weddings within eight years. Rob (George’s dad) took a creative approach and issued Charlie an instructional manual on how to live with the Pullar family, which included gifting her Brisbane Lions apparel.
