THIS weekend animal lovers won’t need to wonder how much the dog in the window costs, with the Animal Welfare League Queensland calling on people to name the price they wish to pay for the newest addition to their family.

The move is part of this weekend’s campaign to rehome animals, with all three of AWLQ’s rehoming centres filled to capacity.

AWLQ communications manager Brooke Whitney said there were 170 animals needing to find a home, and more than 730 more waiting in foster homes or vet clinics for an available kennel.

“We’re at the stage now where it is getting kind of serious and we literally can’t take in any more animals until we get some out,” she said.

“There is no minimum cost for this campaign, but the promotion doesn’t include kittens, puppies or purebreds, as we are focusing on finding homes for our mixed breed and older animals.”

Ms Whitney said the AWLQ was willing to cop a loss on the $500 it generally costs to get an abandoned pet ready for adoption.

She said it was vital for the community to consider adopting to avoid tragic outcomes.

“The alternative would be euthanising animals solely because we don’t have the space and that is not something we are willing to do,” she said.

However, those hoping to adopt will still undergo a strict process to ensure the cats and dogs go to good homes.

“We realise it is a controversial campaign and the public may feel we are neglecting our duty of care by allowing people to pay what they like for an animal,” she said.

“In fact, it is because we care for the lives of these animals that we are having this promotion — we want to save every life possible.

“(Adopters) still have to go through the adoption interview and all of their details are recorded so we know where the animals are going and we can do checks if we need.”

Ms Whitney said there were multiple cats and dogs looking for homes, as well as a rooster and a duck.

All of the cats and dogs are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
