With 150 of the cute little critters in residence, the Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue based at Labrador can no longer house any more and needs responsible people to adopt them.
CAMPAIGN TO STOP LIBRARY SLEEPERS
Founder Alex Winterford said looking after so many cavies was demanding and also expensive.
“It is labour intensive and I spend many hours cleaning cages and preparing food,” she said. “And I could have more in a heartbeat if I took them all.”
Ms Winterford pleaded for people not to breed them.
“Have the sex checked by a vet or someone who knows their stuff because many people think they are getting two males or two females and then discover they have a pair,” she said.
A non-desexed guinea pig starts at $25 and potential adopters will have to complete a screening program to ensure the animals are going to a home where they will be properly cared for.
