THE Coombabah AWL is on a mission to find “fur-ever” homes for all of its dogs and cats before the Christmas rush — can you help?

DOG barks and cat meows are a frequent sound at the AWLQ but come this weekend the local shelter may be silent.

In a mega adoption drive, the Animal Welfare League Queensland will offer reduced adoption prices in a bid to “empty the shelter” and rehome every animal before the busy Christmas period.

WHO CAN RESIST THESE ADORABLE FACES?

As of Monday 200 animals were available for adoption.

AWLQ communications manager Brooke Whitney said it was an opportunity to give abandoned animals the gift of a new home for Christmas.

“Last year we wondered if it would be possible to empty the entire shelter in two days because we were so chockers,” she said.

“This year we are kind of in the same predicament and we had a couple of really slow rehoming weeks, which kind of gave us a bit of a backlog.

“So we are just trying to rehome as a gift to them during Christmas time and to rehome every single animal as an annual event. But we can’t do that without the help of people coming out and adopting them.”

During the two-day sale, mixed breed dogs will be reduced to $50 and cats to $30.

Despite the large amount of prospective adopters needed for the initiative, Ms Whitney said there had been a huge line for last year’s event and they were expecting the same this year.

“Last year we rehomed 92 per cent of the animals and the six or seven left were rehomed in the next couple of days because people couldn’t believe that they were left,” she said. “It was such a feel-good thing and everybody out here had their hearts in the right place.

“They really just wanted to save an animal and give them a home for Christmas.”

The shelter sale will be from 10am to 5pm Saturday December 13 and Sunday December 14 at Shelter Road, Coombabah.

All animals have been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
