Eight-year-old Molly Wright’s record breaking year has seen her deliver the most popular TED Talk in the world and raise thousands of dollars for local wildlife.

The grade two student from the Gold Coast recorded her TED Talk, Thrive by Five, in July.

Molly’s voice reached millions of people across the world when she spoke about the importance of parents connecting with their children before the age of five.

Only seven at the time, Molly is the youngest person to do a TED Talk and it has been watched by almost 5 million people on the TED Talk website and almost 2 million people on YouTube.

“When I heard the news how popular it was I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“Someone tagged me in a post about being the most watched for 2021 and it was just the best way to end the year.”

TED Talks are an internet sensation with videos from experts discussing a topic and have showcased the likes of Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking and Bono.

Molly’s Minderoo Foundation-produced video was supported by UNICEF and the inspiring youngster said it’s just the start for her in public speaking.

“The experience was just amazing. I got to be trained by the Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey, which was really cool,” she said.

“It has made me want to do more public speaking and when I see young people like Amanda Gorman and Greta Thunberg speak, it inspires me even more.”

This year Molly and a group of friends called the Wildlife Warriors helped raise over $20,000 for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

Molly’s mum Ally Wright said her daughter’s passion for wildlife and the love for her three-year-old brother will no doubt mean the eight-year-old would be delivering speeches on animals and child development in the near future.

“It’s powerful for kids to speak for themselves and Molly is really passionate about wildlife and early education,” she said.

“I’m super proud of her and I know she will continue to try and make a difference.”

The eight-year-old started Molly’s Wildlife Warriors in the aim to raise money for the hospital by doing different activities.

The group is made up of six teams from Molly’s friends from school and in the acting community.

The team leaders all took part in a tour at the hospital and on October 31 the Wildlife Warriors will take on activities at Australian Stunt Academy.

Molly said everyone involved has been amazing with the Wildlife Warriors already raising $10,000, which has been matched by Nicola Forrest of Minderoo Foundation.

“I can’t believe how generous everyone has been and all my friends have been incredible,” she said.

She said she loves all animals from her dog Matilda to tiny insects.

“Bees are amazing, if it wasn’t for them and what they do in the ecosystem humans wouldn’t have some of the food. Every animal plays an important part,” she said.

“Animals makes me feel happy and they deserve to be able to live healthy lives. We are trying to raising money so this can happen.”
