Lost little piggy went to Southport and now needs to find a home

IT sounds like a nursery rhyme, but this little lost domestic piggy was found wandering the streets of Southport. Now this little piggy needs a home.

Could you be piglet parents? Intelligent, sociable Wilbur is looking for a forever home.

THIS little piggy went to Southport, now this little piggy needs a home.

This peculiar lost pet story began last week when a member of the public found Wilbur the domestic pig wandering the streets of Southport near China Town.

The good samaritan called the Gold Coast Council as Wilbur appeared to be more than a pre-cooked roast dinner.

“(He’s) pretty much like a dog,” Animal Welfare League Queensland communications manager Craig Montgomery said.

“It’s a bit of a mystery why he was there, but given his condition and how sociable he was, he’s clearly someone’s pet.”

AWLQ shelter workers named him Wilbur after the pig from Charlotte’s Web and held him for a week while searching for his owner.

No one came for him, so the Animal Welfare League is now offering him up for adoption to the right home.

Mr Montgomery said domestic pigs were very similar to dogs, and loved interacting with other pets.

“Staff put him on a harness to walk him, he’s been taught how to sit, and rollover on command,” Mr Montgomery said.

“He’s been well cared for. What we think may have happened, because he doesn’t have a ring through his nose, people put rings through to stop them digging, we think he's dug himself out from his property.

“(Domestic pigs), they’ve become quite a popular pet. Tea cup pigs are very, very small, and they’re popular with celebrities.”

Wilbur is now in the care of Animal Welfare League and is looking for a new home.

However, domestic pigs need some upkeep — Wilbur will need to be desexed by a vet, have annual vaccinations and worming, and regular hoof trimming during his lifespan of 10 to 12 years.

And be prepared for the little piglet to become not so little.

“Wilbur will grow up to be 200kg when he’s older,” Mr Montgomery said.

“He needs to be rehomed where he’s going to be a pet, not a meal.

“He needs an acreage property, ideally. They need to be able to forage, they can be quite destructive.

“He’s only four months old and he’s already causing holes in our facility.

“If people are looking to adopt, make sure they check with their council if they can have a pig or not as there are rules around that.”

Wilbur’s adoption fee is $80, find out how to adopt him here or call 5509 9000.
