MOET the jackoodle might be rugged up for winter, but it won’t stop him from chowing down on some doggie ice cream.
Hugo’s Ice-Creamery, which launched on the Gold Coast in 2015 and is dedicated to providing ice cream treats for pooches, has opened a competition to create a puppy ice cream suitable for the cold winter months.
Hugo’s Ice-Creamery owner Jenna Schroeder said she had already received more than 140 recipe ideas, and some of them were pretty quirky.
“There’s been some really interesting ones,” she said.
“Pea and ham soup, pumpkin spice or soup, Sunday roast with beef and potatoes...
“Or ‘frostbite’, made with blueberries so it’s blue.”
Ms Scroeder said she wasn’t daunted by the fact it would be cold outside and ice cream was traditionally a summer treat.
“Surprisingly, the sales aren’t that much lower in winter. I guess when it’s a miserable day people still like to treat their dogs.
“We’ve already got three flavours, but people really like to get special edition ones. People will go and just buy like 10 of them for themselves and their friends.”
Moet’s owner, Nicole Senese, said she spent a week thinking about a winning flavour combination and settled on two possibilities – ‘Berry Nice’, a berry medley with honey and carob; and ‘We Were Mint To Be’, mint-flavoured ice cream with carob biscuit chunks.
She said she was a bit of a sweet-tooth herself but believed her pup would be a big fan if her recipe was chosen.
Entries for the competition close May 4, with winners announced on May 13. Winners will receive three months worth of doggie ice cream, and the products will be sold in stores.
