DESPERATE pet owners are using social media to find their beloved four-legged friends after scores of dogs fled during New Year's Eve fireworks.
The Facebook page `Gold Coast Lost and Found Pets' has been filled with posts by owners searching for their dogs and by people who found lost dogs running scared around the streets during New Year's Eve celebrations last night.
By midday New Year's Day, the page, which has more than 5,000 'likers', had more than 50 posts - 22 by people looking for their lost dogs and 24 by residents who had found missing pets.
The posts, which have been shared repeatedly by followers, has already had success reuniting some owners.
Kim Le Sech, who had earlier posted that her little dachshund Franki had gone missing, reported he was found hiding under a car by a couple at Palm Beach.
"I just wanted to say a big thank you for your support and information, our little dachshund Franki was returned home this morning," said Kim.
"He was found hiding underneath a car by a couple who just got out of the surf by 11th Ave Palm Beach ... they used the surfboard leash as a lead and Franki led him home to us.
"Poor Franki, he was sighted wandering around the Gold coast Highway and even as far as Salk Oval, so thankful to the couple that brought him home."
Many of the missing dogs are Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Huskies and German Shepherds as well as little dogs like Maltese X Shih tzus.
A poster by the name of Urban Disturbance got a shock when they were reunited with their little white dog Booboo after it went missing in Pacific Pines. It was painted.
"Found my dog, some bastard has painted him," said Urban Disturbance on the page.
Melissa Melrose put the call out for her Husky X German Shepherd, which went missing from Worongary while Ashley O'Leary was searching for his eight-year-old German Shepherd Zac, who went missing from Ormeau.
The page recommends posting photos of the missing or found pets and putting signs up around the neighbourhood as well as contacting the Gold Coast City Council pound on 5581 7600.
The pound, on Shelter Road Coombabah, is open for limited hours on New Year's Day from 10am to 2pm.
