People can't decide if this wedding guest's dress is wildy inappropriate or not

"I think it’s excessive, even the heels appeared bridal. Am I overreacting?" the bride asked after sharing photos of her aunt's lacy outfit.

What not to do at a wedding

A classic wedding etiquette question has resurfaced online after a bride's social media post ignited a debate about what guests should wear.

The Aussie bride shared a photo of her aunt's outfit at her recent wedding, leaving commenters to decide whether her controversial choice broke an unwritten rule of not wearing white.

In photos shared on Facebook, the aunt can be seen wearing a long-sleeved nude midi dress with a white lace overlay.

The controversial nude and white lace dress

"My aunt wore this dress to my wedding, raising questions about whether it’s okay for a guest to wear this much white," the bride posted.

"I think it’s excessive, even the heels appeared bridal. Am I overreacting?"

One person quickly pointed out that the reason behind the classic 'don't wear white' rule is because "it would be rude to be mistaken for the bride."

"So that dress simply doesn’t qualify," they claimed after judging the photo.

"I really don’t care what the reasoning is," someone else chimed in, "don’t wear white in general. Anything that could be worn by the bride to a rehearsal dinner, shower, or any celebration is a dress that should be avoided."

While most other commenters agreed that following this sort of advice is the way to go - others thought it could be too limiting for guests when choosing their outfits.

"Anything that could be worn by the bride?" someone asked, "Jeez. That pretty much leaves jeans, no?"

Another pointed out, "The aunt was never going to be mistaken for the bride because everyone knows whose wedding they're at!"

"That is not the point at all," someone else succinctly clapped back.

"The only saving grace is that it's not a full-length dress"

"For me personally, not wearing white is more about that being the bride’s colour and the bride standing out more if she’s the only one wearing that colour," a commenter responded. "Many, many people are on the same page about not wanting guests in white at all."

"The only saving grace is that it's not a full-length dress," someone else concluded. "But it’s still not really cool."
