Abbie Chatfield has revealed that she may not have children with her musician boyfriend due to her concerns about climate change.
The host of It’s A Lot podcast and F-Boy Island shared this personal admission with her 490,000 TikTok followers over the weekend after a fan praised the couple’s loved-up displays that Chatfield often shares online.
In the clip, her boyfriend and one half of electronic duo Peking Duk, Adam Hyde, is seen trying on a variety of Chatfield’s quirky sunglasses and using different voices to match each pair.
“What’s up? You wanna go party or what?” he jokes while wearing tiny black spectacles.
“These are sick,” he says in a pair of silver-rimmed aviators while putting on a thick Sylvester Stallone accent.
In response to the video, one follower commented, “You two would be the coolest parents ever.”
Chatfield promptly replied, managing expectations by stating, “Very sad climate change means probably not going to happen.”
Responses varied, with one person responding with “Bahahahahahah,” seemingly mocking her environmentally conscious perspective, while another replied, “Oh please, seriously.”
News.com.au has reached out to Chatfield for comment.
It comes just a day after Chatfield shared a series of mirror selfies on her Instagram account, in which Hyde is seen cradling her belly.
Speculation quickly began that the power couple might be expecting a child.
One person commented, “My sister, you can’t do this. I thought you were announcing a baby.”
Another person admitted, “I thought this was a pregnancy post, and now I’m sad it’s not.”
Someone else added, “So did I! Adam needs to be more careful with those hand placements before he gets everyone excited.”
In response, Chatfield said, “HAHAHA I’M SORRY!” adding, “The only thing in there is an IUD.”
It is unclear whether Chatfield’s comment about climate change suggests that she believes climate change will affect her ability to have children, or if she prefers not to bring children into a world increasingly impacted by climate change.
Either way, the 29-year-old joins a chorus of Aussie women questioning their choices about whether parenthood is for them, as Australia’s birthrate continues to fall to a record low.
Recent figures from the Bureau of Statistics indicate that only 286,998 births were registered nationwide last year, resulting in a total fertility rate of 1.50 babies per woman.
Experts suggest that a “replacement level” of 2.1 babies per woman is necessary for society to sustain its population.
A 2021 survey by The Lancet found that just over 43 per cent of the 10,000 respondents in Australia expressed hesitance about having children due to concerns about climate change.
Last year, Chatfield shared that she had been in a “state of panic” over how warm it was during Sydney’s winter.
As it climbed to 20 degrees during August, she said in a post, “It’s really f***ing scary how warm it is right now.
“If anyone has any positive climate thoughts I would love that, because I’ve been in a state of panic for months.”
The former Bachelor star is well-known for being vocal about her opinions on environmental issues and climate change.
During the New South Wales election, she encouraged her fans to “vote for change” regarding climate action.
She posted a photo of herself at the election next to a ‘climate action now’ sign, saying, “New South Wales! Vote today! Vote for change! Use your preferences; do not just vote 1.”
Chatfield officially hard launched her relationship with Hyde in June of this year and has been very open about how “in love” they are ever since.
The pair initially met in 2022 when the media personality interviewed Peking Duk, but they didn’t start dating until a year later.
“He makes everything sparkly. He’s so funny … I just love being around him, and he makes me so happy,” Chatfield shared.
“I cry every day because of how happy I am. He’s just been the kindest, most supportive person.”
Hyde has described their relationship as “something out of a fairytale.”
