My husband fed the kids the worst before-school breakfast you can give

"Do you agree this isn't the right thing or enough for a big day ahead?"

Dad shares affordable dinner

If you've never heard of eating cereal for dessert, you have yet to live, my friends.

But surely, you've heard of eating cereal for breakfast, right?

Yes. The primary purpose of cereal is fairly universally understood.

That's what makes this story a tad strange... because one mum is outraged that her husband gave their kids cereal with a bit of fruit for breakfast.

"Rice Krispies are a suitable breakfast"

Taking to an online parenting group, the mum asked if she's being unreasonable.

She wrote: "DH (darling husband) would happily send children (three and six) off to school/childminder on one bowl of Rice Krispies and a bit of fruit in the morning.

"I feel very strongly about filling kids' tummies properly before school, and while I have no problem with a bowl of Rice Krispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense."

The mum added, "We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to gauge what others think - is a bowl of Rice Krispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?"

"Not everyone likes a big breakfast"

The commenters in the group encouraged the mother to see reason (aka get a grip).

"Not everyone likes a big breakfast," one wrote.

Others agreed that it was at least something in their bellies, adding they thought cereal was "totally fine."

Some recalled their own childhood breakfasts: "It's what I ate, with a banana every day for years (school and above). I'd usually take a small snack for first break, like a Babybel or Ryvita and cream cheese and an apple, but I don't think I was ever particularly hungry."

Another added, "You may not like it for your children, but surely it is obvious that plenty of people do? It’s breakfast cereal that has been on shelves and in peoples breakfast bowls for decades.

"When I was a kid I used to have it with sliced banana and sultanas on top. And a spoon of sugar!"

Lastly, lest we appear to be besmirching Rice Krispies, there's this point to consider on the Kellogg's website:  Rice Krispies are asserted to be a source of vitamin D and are made from multigrain, which contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
