My bestie told me if I wanted to be a bridesmaid, I’d have to take out a loan

“The fact that some people really think their wedding is THAT important…”

Groom checks phone while bride walks down the aisle

While it’s always an honour to be part of the bridal party, it doesn’t come without a cost, and sometimes, that cost can snowball into an enormous debt.

American woman Mooky is excited to celebrate her friend’s wedding in July; taking place in Miami, Florida, the bride plans on throwing a “luxe boho glam” event, with Mooky walking down the aisle as a bridesmaid

While the nuptials aren’t slated for another month, there are endless events leading up to the big day, and it’s starting to cost an absolute bomb.

“I really am just not sure I’m going to be able to afford everything”

The bride, Wren*, has organised a lot of exciting events in the lead-up to her wedding, but the costs for everything have started to pile up.

There’s the engagement party, two bachelorette parties, and a bridal shower, each has its own strict dress code and activities.

If that wasn’t enough, squished between each event are other activities such as spa weekends, hair and makeup trials, beauty routines, and multiple compulsory treatments in the week leading up to the Miami wedding.

No doubt that would cost a pretty penny or two.

So, Mooky decided to reach out to the bride for clarification, messaging her and asking if they could organise a time “to talk this week”.

“I really am just not sure I’m going to be able to afford everything,” she said, per the now-viral TikTok

“I know how special you want this day to be, but is there any way we could reconsider some of the events and clothing?”

All up, Mooky said she’s expecting to pay $20,000 (AU$30,000) for the wedding, and she’s not even the bride!

Wren didn’t take long to respond, but it may not have been what Mookie was expecting. “Hey girl. Uhm sorry to say but unfortunately not really,” the response read.

In fact, Wren believes it’s Mooky’s fault for accepting the role of bridesmaid if she couldn’t afford it.

“I did lay this out in my bridal party pdf,” Wren said. “I’m not sure why it’s such a surprise actually, I’m sure you’ve been budgeting this for a while.”

And if that was out of Mooky’s budget, there was a clear solution: just get a credit card.

“I’d ask you to please just find a way to make it happen, you know? It’s once in a lifetime. Don’t you have a high-budget Amex?” she suggested. “In a pinch maybe you could use that and figure it out later?”

If that wasn’t an option, Mooky could just take out a “$20k loan … with a little interest” to help pay for her bridesmaid duties.

Amid the questionable financial advice, Wren said she was speechless by Mooky’s request. “Sorry, just don’t really know what to say,” she wrote.

Yet somehow, in almost the same breath, Wren swiftly moved the subject back to her upcoming nuptials, namely the bachelorette party.

“Are the girls planning something special to gift me at the bachelorette party?” Wren asked Mooky.

“Just want to make sure you’re thinking of it. No pressure, this is just the most stressed I’ve ever been planning this, for everyone to enjoy and I really think I could use a treat!”

Ah, that’s right, nothing better than alleviating some of your stress by making bridesmaids fork out tens of thousands for your day.

Later that week, Wren sent a list of items she would love to receive from the bridesmaids, including a skincare kit, a set of crystal glasses, a pair of pearl and jewel earrings, all of which cost more than $1,000 each.

But the pièce de résistance was an encrusted handbag shaped like an ‘80s phone, which retails for a whopping $6,000.

Fed up, Mooky doesn’t know how to tell her “bestie” she simply can’t afford everything Wren has organised.

“I might have to end this friendship, but I don’t want to,” she captioned the clip.

“Real friends wouldn’t consider putting their bridal party in debt”

People simply couldn’t wrap their minds around Wren’s entitlement, slamming the bride for her outlandish requests.

“Girl please set boundaries for yourself and say no, and end the friendship,” read a comment. “She is a terrible person.”

“Even $2k for a bachelorette party to me is insane,” someone said.

“The fact that some people really think their wedding is THAT important,” wrote a third. “‘No’ is a complete sentence. ALWAYS choose yourself,” a person agreed.

Wren clearly isn’t a good friend, the TikTok community concluded.

“Save your money, if someone is asking that much of you, they are not your friend,” read a wise comment. “Real friends wouldn’t consider putting their bridal party in debt, especially around $20k of debt.”
