Melbourne 8yo in critical condition after car hits children playing in laneway

The two kids were playing in the Braybrook laneway when a driver crashed into several parked cars.

Two children have been rushed to hospital, one suffering life-threatening injuries, after a car allegedly pinned one of them to another vehicle in Melbourne’s west.

Two little boys, aged eight and three, were playing in the laneway between Wirraway Ave and Liberator Lane in Braybook at 5.20 pm on Tuesday. 

According to Victoria Police, a 48-year-old man driving a Toyota Prado crashed into two parked cars in the rear laneway.

Two children rushed to hospital after being struck by car

The driver then hit the eight-year-old boy, pinning him between two cars before hitting another parked vehicle. 

When emergency services arrived, the child was rescued from between the crushed vehicles. 

He was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious injuries to his upper and lower body.

A three-year-old who was with the other child at the time was also taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

48-year-old man arrested at the scene

The Braybrook man driving the vehicle was arrested at the scene, Victoria Police confirmed.  

"A man believed to be in his 40s was transported to Western Hospital Footscray in a stable condition for observation," said a spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria. 

He is currently assisting them with their enquiries regarding the incident. 

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives and local police continue to investigate.
