‘I told my cousin her kid’s name was ridiculous; yes it’s petty, I don’t care’

“Poor child. That name looks like it was typed on a keyboard with mostly broken keys.”

Mum who makes personalised baby clothes shares unusual baby name requests

When thinking of a name for your child, a million thoughts will likely rush through your head.

Will they look like their name? Can you make a nickname out of this? Should the name be as unique as my child is? Will this name cause my child to get picked on at school?

Catherine* has always been a bit insecure about her family’s quirkiness. Well, that’s how she would like to describe them, anyway.

So when she heard the name her cousin picked out for their newborn daughter, she couldn’t help but share her true feelings.

“My cousin said her daughter’s name was straightforward and easy to read”

Catherine’s family got a little larger a few weeks ago, with her cousin Molly* welcoming their first child to the world.

Sharing the photos of their little bundle of joy on Facebook, the happy couple also announced the name of their darling daughter.

“She then sent that Facebook post to our family group chat,” Catherine recalled.

Before Catherine learned the name of her cousin’s daughter, she explained on the Reddit sub a little bit more about her family.

“My family is what I would call 'quirky,'” she said. “Because they're kinda problematic and using the right term would definitely offend them.”

When Molly was pregnant, she started coming up with a list of names that she and her partner hoped would be one-of-a-kind.

To put it in her own words, Molly wanted the kid’s name to be “cool and unique.”

Her partner, on the other hand, wasn’t so keen on the idea.

“Honestly, at this point, I'm just wondering what her boyfriend thinks about the name,” Catherine wrote. “Because a couple [of] months back he wanted something 'simple' like Emma.”

However, the couple did not go for the name Emma. Instead, they opted for “Lylyt Yvyh Yryhl”, which is pronounced like “Lilith Eva Uriel.”

After hearing the name, Catherine couldn't contain herself and started “laughing my ass off” in the group chat.

After Molly clarified why she and her partner decided to name their daughter Lylyt Yvyh Yryhl, Catherine sent back a response reading, “r/tragedeigh”, a reference made online for someone who picks a baby name that goes out of its way to be cool, unique, or edgy, only to be somewhat outlandish or (sometimes) unreadable.

But Catherine’s cousin “really thinks it's 'straightforward and easy to read.’”

At first, Molly had no idea what her cousin was talking about, but it wasn’t until a younger relative explained the online slang term that she hit the roof.

“She then told me my name is s**ttier and my parents aren't creative, that's why I have a 'basic ass' name,” Catherine said.

Looking back, while she knows her comment was “a dick move”, she had absolutely no regrets sharing her true feelings about her cousin’s beloved name. “Yes, she deserves it,” Catherine wrote. “Yes, two wrongs do not make a right. Yes, I am petty.”

“Is this a name or did the cat run over the keyboard again?”

While many Redditors were amused by Catherine’s cheeky comments to her cousin, others couldn’t look past how “awful” the child’s name was.

“Poor child,” someone said. “It looks like it was typed on a keyboard with mostly broken keys.”

“That's nearly impossible to read and decipher,” shared another. “Your cousin may be livid, but you're absolutely right.”

“Is she a Lynyrd Skynyrd superfan or something?” a person asked. “Is this a name or did the cat run over the keyboard again?”

“Nobody will ever, ever pronounce any of those keysmashes correctly,” someone wrote. “And she'll probably change her name to something sensible like Susan the day she turns 18.”
