The Gold Coast’s biggest Oktoberfest party is taking place on October 5 so prepare yourself for bucketloads of bier, bratwurst and bretzel (the traditional spelling of pretzel).

The inaugural Oktoberfest on the Coast will take over the rear ovals of the Gold Coast Sports Precinct, with a Bavarian Beer Hall, six bars, two music stages, a German sausage stall and classic beer garden tables.

Organiser Todd Forrest says he wants the event to reflect the history of Oktoberfest which all started with a wedding in 1810.

“Prince Ludwig, he got married to Therese, they had so much at the wedding they continued the wedding for 16 days,” he says.

“It’s all about bringing people together over a big long table sharing food and drinks.”

The music will begin with traditional oompa bands and will conclude with sets from Australian DJs.

Todd is expected to sell 15,000L of German brewed beer on the day, as well as a selection of wines and other German liquors. Doors open 1pm, tickets from $30.

NEW LOCALLY-BREWED BEER THAT ‘PACKS A PUNCH’

Oktoberfest will run for not eine but zwei weekends at The Bavarian Haus, a Surfers Paradise restaurant that pays permanent homage to the land of steins and sausages.

The event will take over the laneway next door on September 27 to 29 and October 4 to 6 with live music, beer and food vans and novelty games.

“This is the first time we’re launching it bigger and better than ever,” marketing manager Candice Pizzol says.

Dust off your finest lederhosen or dirndl for the chance to win a prize in the best dressed competition. Tickets from $30, the events start at 3pm.

How much bier could you drink in six weeks? German restaurant group The Bavarian is appropriately going all out for Oktoberfest this year, with a month-long-plus celebration of German culture taking place across its three Gold Coast venues in Broadbeach, Coomera and Robina. Experience authentic German food and drink when you order the Oktoberfest package, featuring three courses of signature Bavarian dishes, a 1L stein of beer, a schnapps shot and a show bag. Festivities will conclude with a closing party from 6pm on October 26.

ICONIC SURFERS BAR TO LAUNCH NEW DANCE CLUB

While they’re known for their outrageous experimental drops, Black Hops Brewing is taking a more refined approach to marking Oktoberfest. The craft brewer’s two tap houses in Burleigh Heads and Biggera Waters will pay tribute to the beer motherland by going back to basics on September 28. “It can be easily forgotten Oktoberfest is about beer, made from water, hops, malt and yeast,” manager Allie Andre says. “We’re releasing four German beers that day made from those ingredients. We’ve got the Hefferweizen, Kolsch, Munich Dunkel and the Rauchbier. We just want to go back to appreciate the forefathers of beer.”
