New Gold Coast cafe Grounded in Miami on Kiers Rd serving up hemp lattes and treats

Would you like a hemp latte with your avo on toast? A new southern Gold Coast cafe is changing attitudes towards the cannabis by-product with a menu full of tempting hemp treats.

A new cafe in Miami is changing attitudes towards the cannabis by-product with a menu full of hemp treats and coffee brewed on hemp milk.

Grounded in Miami owner Zeus Stellas said he wanted to create a space for the community to learn more about the benefits of consuming the plant extract, known to contain high levels of healthy fats, vitamins and protein.

“We wanted a place where people could hang out and understand what we’re providing,” he said.

“I think there’s also a lack of quality, organic, seasonal cafes on the Gold Coast.

“It was a combination of those two things for wanting to open.”

Mr Stellas is a trained chef and runs Grounded in Miami on Kiers Rd with his partner

Natasha Kasper, who worked as a barista at Bam Bam Bakehouse for three years.

He has been producing and selling hemp milk since 2018 and said the demand for hemp was exploding.

“In Australia (the hemp industry) is growing 600 per cent per year. Three years ago it was illegal to make food with hemp. Once the laws changed, I imported 1000kg of hemp seed and 1000kg of hemp protein powder. I put my head in a bit deep, but I believe in the product.”

The cafe’s organic and sustainable ethos continues through the food, with the vast majority of ingredients for the Greek-inspired menu sourced from farms on Tamborine Mountain.

“Our main motto here is ‘food is medicine’,” Mr Stellas said.

“We have Greek salads, souvlaki and traditional baked foods that are all family recipes I got off my grandmother.

“We have a ‘breakfast of champions’ with a scotch fillet steak. My grandmother used to make me that and say ‘you’re a growing boy, you need to eat’.”

Grounded in Miami is open daily for breakfast and for dinner Thursday to Sunday.
