A Gold Coast school has been named one of Queensland’s best, for its science and technology program.

Merrimac State High School was announced as one of the state finalists in the 2019 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools this morning.

The awards celebrate the most innovative public schools in Queensland, with the winners to share in $90,000 of development grants.

Merrimac State High School was the only Gold Coast school to be named as a finalist.

It is one of two schools in the running to win the Qsuper Showcase Award for Excellence in the Secondary Years for its STEAMing to international success program.

The program sees students compete in the World Robot Summit, with the Merrimac team taking out the championships two years in a row.

At the time principal Chris Tobin said the students received special recognition by the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence.

“Our students were given the only award offered by the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence in recognition of an outstanding code they developed to promote literacy and numeracy learning in the early years — an extraordinary achievement,” he said

“We have one of Australia’s top robotics programs here at Merrimac State High School, and this recent success certainly builds on the last three years’ progress in developing a world-class STEAM program.”

The Merrimac program has also won the regional award for southeast Queensland in the same category.

Beenleigh Special School and Beenleigh State High School were also recognised as state finalists.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the quality of submissions was very high this year.

“The Awards highlight Queensland state schools’ efforts in developing innovative practices that improve outcomes for students,” she said.

“It’s important that we publicly recognise the great work our educators do every day in teaching our young Queenslanders.

The winners will be announced at the Showcase Awards Gala Dinner on October 25.
