Perth mum’s Kmart coffee table hack stuns Aussie home makers

At first, the Perth mum wasn’t convinced by her own hack, but once she completed it, she, like thousands of others were in awe.

Woman’s ‘stunning’ Kmart hack goes viral

Most great hacks are the result of not being able to justify the very expensive cost of the original item you had your heart set on.

Maddison Black, from Perth, was after a $1300 stone coffee table from a trendy store – but the hefty price tag prompted her to create her own version, with her clever hack going viral on TikTok.

At first, Maddison said she was not convinced by how her much cheaper table was shaping up, but once it was completed, she, like thousands of others were in awe.

To help bring her creative vision to life, the mother-of-two purchased Kmart’s $59 Archer black coffee table and $107 worth of mosaic marble tiles from Bunnings.

“There’s a brand that makes these beautiful stone tables which cost around $1300 and then to get it shipped from NSW to Perth is extortion,” Maddison told news.com.au.

“But I really wanted a stone table and I remember seeing meshed stones from Bunnings.

“I wasn’t sure it was going to work because when I started applying it to the table, it just wasn’t working.”

Maddison said the moment her and her partner James glued them on, it all started to come together.

“It was looking like it was part of Fred Flintstone’s house, but we kept at it and once the grout went in, it looked completely different.”

Maddison said the whole process took just a few hours which included assembling the table, painting it white and then applying the stone tiles.

“The rule of thumb is to pop the tiles on an angle so they align better,” Maddison said.

“After we applied the grout, we used a wet foam sponge to wipe away the excess and then a damp cloth to give it one more clean once it dried overnight.”

The savvy mum then posted a video of her hack online, immediately receiving rave reviews.

“Absolutely stunning,” one TikTok user wrote.

“Not me living in the US wishing we still had Kmart,” another joked.

“Wow amazing,” a third person added, while a fourth wrote: “This is so cool.”

Maddison also shared a photo of the coffee table to her Instagram revealing one of her favourite comments was: “Looks pretty in the photo but it would be ugly in real life.”

The 32-year-old said she was overwhelmed by the mostly positive feedback telling news.com.au her TikTok page “blew up” days after sharing the hack.

The clip has so far amassed more than 171,000 views.

“I put it on Instagram first then on TikTok and it didn’t get much reaction, but by the fourth day my phone went crazy and I was like, ‘What’s going on.’”

All up, the hack cost Maddison just under $200.
