Gold Coast’s newest nurses and midwives: New health graduates of the highest quality

Gold Coast Health Services has received an injection of new blood as nursing and midwifery graduates kick start their careers in the city’s hospitals.

BROOKE Rudman has nursing in her blood.

Ms Rudman, 24, said she always wanted to follow her mother into the frontline position for as long as she can remember.

“I guess you could say it’s in my blood — forever,” she said.

“I’ve always been a caring person and I think I’m meant to be where I am and I enjoy every minute of it.”

Ms Rudman is one of the 155 new nursing and midwifery graduates starting their career with Gold Coast Health Services.

Midwifery graduate Alexandria Slater, 21, said the workplace had opened her eyes to the world.

“In the clinic we do a lot of domestic violence screening,” she said.

“It wasn’t until I came into this degree that I realised how common this kind of thing is, how everyday people going through such difficult situations.”

Ms Slater is working in the anti-natal clinic.

“I love it — you’re in such a privileged position and it’s such a special time in people’s lives,” she said.

Dr Anita Bamford-Wade, the professor of nursing and midwifery said she was impressed with the quality of the graduates.

“It couldn’t be better,” she said.

“They come well equipped to step into the real environment and if we wrap support around them they should really flourish.”

Meaghan Scanlon, the Member for Gaven, said it was an exciting time for health care on the Gold Coast.

“It’s always great to have new young fresh graduates coming through Gold Coast hospitals,” she said.

“The Gold Coast University Hospital is a world-class facility so we hope a lot of these graduates will continue their career here.”
