Feeling the chill this weekend? Meteorologists have predicted Gold Coast temps will drop into the single digits in coming days.

The Gold Coast is set to freeze as temperatures drop almost half a dozen degrees today.

Temperatures are set to max out at just 22 degrees, down five degrees from yesterday’s above average 27 degrees.

WeatherZone meteorologist Tom Hough said it was just the start of a chilly week for the Coast.

“It will just hover around 21, 22 degrees up until the weekend,” he said.

“The whole week’s looking below average in the early mornings, but only by a few degrees.

“Wednesday morning it will drop down to seven degrees, which is eight degrees below average.”

Aditi Sharan from the Bureau of Meteorology said the Coast could expect “generally sunny” weather to go with its cold snap.

“But there is an increased chance of showers from Saturday onwards,” she said.

“We’re expecting temperatures to drop about five degrees below average.”

It comes at the end of a drier than average Autumn this year, with rainfall still well below average for May just days from the start of Winter.

“March was significantly wetter than average but that was down to a single day where we had 159mm,” Mr Hough said.

“April was probably 50 per cent what we’d expect with 70mm, the average being 138mm.

“For May we’ve had 113mm. It doesn’t look like there’s going to be any more this month, there could be another five millimetres but that’s not going to bring it up to average.”

Winter is also predicted to have below average rainfall throughout the season.

The Queensland Government’s Climate Review for the coming months reveals the Coast has only a 30 per cent chance of exceeding average rainfalls.

The region earlier this year sweated through his driest January on record.

It rained just five times throughout the month, with totals falling dramatically below average.

Meteorologists at the time said the records showed an “alarming” trend which could bring the Coast’s driest year.
