SANTA is preparing to ditch his red suit for boardies, but plans to pack wet weather gear too, as forecasters tip “above average” festive season temperatures along with thunderstorms.
Gold Coasters are set to melt by Christmas with scorching temperatures predicted for later this month while periodic storms are forecast from today to Saturday.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rosa Hoff said the weather leading up to Christmas would be unseasonably hot and dry.
“Temperatures are likely to be above average, and below average rainfall is expected,” she said. “It will be quite dry.”

High temperatures and humidity will hit the Coast for the rest of this week, tipping 39C in nearby Beaudesert on Sunday with thunderstorms forecast today and tomorrow.
Today Coomera is tipped to be the city’s hottest, expected to reach 35C, while 34C is forecast at Nerang, Robina 31C, Surfers Paradise 30C and Coolangatta 29C.

While getting in some rays on the Surfers Paradise beachfront yesterday, Santa told the Bulletin he would be throwing open the doors to a holiday beach bungalow in Cavill Mall from December 20.
He will be available for selfies between 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm until Christmas Eve. Santa’s reindeer will also be making an appearance at the Soul tower.
The big man can’t get enough of the Glitter Strip, hosting Carols on the Beach in Surfers Paradise on December 22 from 6.30pm.
