Gold Coast has cheapest fuel in south east Queensland, says RACQ

The Gold Coast has been labelled the cheapest place to fuel up in the south east for the fifth month in a row.

Petrol Prices – What is fuelling the rise?

The Gold Coast has been labelled the cheapest place to fuel up in the south east for the fifth month in a row.

According to RACQ’s Monthly Fuel Price Report, the Gold Coast has recorded the lowest fuel prices in the state since the start of this year.

Last month, unleaded petrol was on average 146.2 cents per litre, compared to Brisbane on 149.8 cpl and the Sunshine Coast, which came in at 153.6 cpl.

RACQ spokeswoman Lucinda Ross said the cheaper prices in the city came down to competition, noting specific suburbs across the city had cheaper options than others thanks to a variety of petrol stations to choose from.

At the moment, prices are hovering around 126.7 cpl, with Freedom Fuels in Arundel the cheapest at 125.7 cpl and other service stations such as Caltex Parkwood and 7-Eleven Labrador at 125.9 cpl.

“Gold Coast motorists certainly have reason to celebrate with not only bowser prices lower than other centres, but the retail margins charged by local service stations fairer than those in many other parts of the State,” she said.

“We have seen in recent months that the Gold Coast has some really competitive markets.

“Southport, Labrador and Runaway Bay have these clusters of cheap places. There are other spots on the Coast too and we can only put it down to competition, which is fantastic and drives prices down.”

Ms Ross said the Queensland Transparency Fuel Price System, introduced late last year by the state government, had also helped to keep prices competitive.

The system sees retailers upload their fuel prices every 15 minutes in a bid to keep prices more transparent.

It also allows drivers to check in on a fuel price comparison app to find the cheapest place to fill up.

Ms Ross said drivers could save hundreds of dollars each year by simply taking 30 seconds before heading out to find the closest and cheapest station in their area.

“There’s really healthy competition on the Gold Coast,” she said.

“The Sunshine Coast is 5 to 10 cents per litre higher, consistently.”

Ms Ross said it was difficult to predict whether the fuel would remain cheaper on the Gold Coast and urged drivers to fuel up during the bottom of the price cycle, paying no more than 135 cpl.
