ONE of the Surfers Paradise party precinct’s oldest venues is about to undergo a big-budget makeover.
The Surfers Paradise Beer Garden will get its own deck overlooking Cavill Ave Mall as part of the facelift.
If approval by the Gold Coast City Council, the deck will be built over the stairways where the existing glass roof will be removed to open up the area.
NEW TOWER DEVELOPMENT FOR SURFERS PARADISE
Timber panelling will be placed around the deck to create a modern look.
New LED signage will also be placed on the building’s exterior and fixed umbrellas and sliding doors installed on the existing outdoor deck overlooking Cavill and Orchid avenues.
A development application report filed with the council says the new-look premises would “enhance” the area.
GOLD SUPERTOWER PLANNED FOR SURFERS
“The proposal will not result in any significant adverse impacts on the environment or surrounding uses but rather will enhance the overall aesthetic of the premises and will positively contribute to the recreation and entertainment appeal of the Surfers Paradise locality,” the report says.
The beer garden can trace its origins back to Jim Cavill’s famous Surfers Paradise Hotel, built in 1925.
The hotel survived its destruction by fire in 1936 when it was rebuilt.
It continued to operate its famous beer garden until it was demolished in 1981 to make way for the construction of the Paradise Centre where the current tavern continues to operate.
Its last major revamp came in 2009.
FLASHBACK: GOLD COAST SAYS GOODBYE TO GRUNDY’S
Glen Day, president of the city’s peak restaurant body, the Restaurant Industry Support Gold Coast Association, said the facelift would help keep the veteran nightspot competitive.
“I think it will go quite well in Cavill Ave,” he said. “I used to go the beer garden as a young bloke when it was just grass and it was fantastic.
“A revamp like this is a good idea. It is really competitive out there and you need to offer something a bit different.
“There is too much of everything for the people who are not just here in peak seasons, so anything like this is good.”
