Aussies stunned to learn what breadcrumbs are made of

Aussies are “gobsmacked” after discovering what breadcrumbs are really made of – after one mum revealed they sometimes consist of far more ingredients than what it says on the tin.

TikTok user Tara Louise, who has amassed a following of more than 28,000 on the platform for her “easy cost of living solutions”, shared a video on Wednesday with the revelation.

“I’m just in Coles and I need to grab some breadcrumbs, and I thought they’d all be the same – I just grab whatever’s the cheapest if I don’t have any at home,” Tara began, adding she prefers to make them herself.

“I went to grab the cheapest [option] and I thought I’d have a quick look at the ingredients, and look at the difference. This is the Coles brand breadcrumbs – it works out at $0.03 per 10 grams ($1.70 a packet), but look at all the ingredients that are in here. I’m not saying it’s good or bad, it just seems a lot of stuff for bread.”

As many as 58 ingredients were listed on the back of the breadcrumbs’ packet, including gelatine, wheat gluten, vinegar, and pumpkin seeds, among others.

The next-cheapest alternative, also Coles own brand, was a “little less daunting”, Tara said, with just four ingredients: flour (wheat), salt, sugar and yeast.

Depending on where the breadcrumbs are made, one person explained in the comments, a variety of breads may be used for a single blend.

“It’s easier to list all ingredients used in their products,” she wrote under Tara’s video.

“One bakery I worked for had to do the same for their shop-made breadcrumbs.”

Someone else, who identified themselves as a Coles employee, explained that the cheapest option “is made from scraps of other breads in the bake house, so they list all of the ingredients for all the breads, the other ones are a purpose-made simple dough for breadcrumbs”.

Others expressed their surprise at the number of additives in such a humble food.

“Wow I buy the budget ones because I like the taste of them, have never thought to check out what’s actually in there,” one person wrote.

“I check a lot of labels for ingredients but wouldn’t even think to check breadcrumbs. I assumed they were all the same,” another commented.

“I must admit I’ve never thought about looking at the ingredients for breadcrumbs! I can’t get over all of those ingredients in the first one!!!” a third said.
