A “gourmet” toasted sandwich has caused uproar after people spotted the eye-watering price of the cafe staple.

The snap of the $31.20 ham toastie, which was overflowing with cheese, from a Perth cafe on a delivery service platform was shared to Reddit.

“$32 ham toastie anyone? My last post was about nachos but at least I can’t make (Old El Paso) at home easy,” the image was captioned.

“I do know delivery apps add a surcharge and make everything more expensive but Jesus Christ IT’S A HAM AND CHEESE (TOASTIE). I think this’ll be the moment that finally gets me to quit these apps for good.”

Social media users had a lot to say on the subject.

“Peeps need to stop PAYING these ridiculous prices. Just taking the absolute p***,” one commenter said.

Another chimed in, “I’m a chef by trade; it looks like a Croque Monsieur, basically a ham toastie with bechamel on the outside and inside. It’s a lovely sandwich that I’d only charge at most 20 bucks, but realistically, $15.”

“I truly aspire to have $32 ham toastie kind of money,” one social media user commented.

Another blamed delivery apps, saying, “Gouging customers, restaurants and delivery drivers is a sh***y business model. I refuse to use them and encourage others to boycott them also.”

“This looks like a great toastie, but by the time it has arrived at your house the cheese will be cold and hard. Ew,” someone else said.

Others targeted the people who chose to purchase the dish.

“If you or anyone else bought it – THEY ARE THE PROBLEM, not part of the problem, they are the problem,” one commented.

She shared a snap of the chips and tomato sauce, saying: “Everyone carries on about supporting local businesses but they are also the ones who are taking the p***.”

The woman said that another customer in front of her bought herself a kids meal as she “clearly thought the main was too expensive”.

“And when she asked to swap the tomato sauce on her meal for tartare she was charged extra. What a joke,” she said.

She said she brought it up with the owner, who shrugged it off.

Independent Food Distributors Australia chief executive Richard Forbes, whose organisation’s members provide food to 60,000 cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs, said distributors have experienced a 30 per cent increase in the cost of food over the past three years.

“We’ve all seen the price of beverages and food rise over the last two or three years. That’s not going to get any better until we start doing something to rein in the costs of business,” Mr Forbes told news.com.au.

“We can see it getting to a point of a $10 cup of coffee if things don’t improve … and if things aren’t done to stabilise the cost of business.”
