Coles roasted over staffer’s shelf mistake: ‘Everything’s going up’

A viral video mocking a ticketing error made on a jar of popular spread has caused a stir online, with many roasting the supermarket’s blunder.

Coles shoppers playfully point out ticketing error

Shoppers are having a field day with a supermarket’s ticketing error, playfully roasting the Australian retailer over the pricing mistake.

A video posted to TikTok by @deficitincalories showed that the marked down price on Coles’ yellow “special” ticket was the same as the original price on a jar of Lotus Biscoff Smooth Spread.

The man behind the account said in the clip: “So guys, Biscoff is on special for $6.50.”

He then pulled bag the tag to reveal the original price was also $6.50.

Coles explained the “mistake” was down to human error, but it hasn’t stopped social media users having a bit of fun.

“Wow, what a bargain,” one social media user said.

“Inflation is coming for everything, even Biscoff!” another added.

A third joked: “Wait … what … where? I can’t get to Coles fast enough!”

Despite the fact there wasn’t actually a saving on the popular spread, it didn’t stop the man behind the video from purchasing the item.

“It actually used to be $5.50, so there’s no special there,” he claimed, before adding: “But I bought it anyway.”

Others commented on this, stating “everything was going up – even spreads”.

“I thought it was cheaper than that. Worth it though,” someone else stated.

Coles reassured customers pricing errors are addressed appropriately.

“All Coles Supermarkets apply ‘Our Promise on Price Scanning’ to ensure confidence in the pricing accuracy at our registers,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“If a single item scans at a higher price than the advertised or ticketed shelf price for that item, we will give the customer that item free.

“Our Promise on Price Scanning goes above and beyond the requirements of the Australian “Consumer Law, which requires businesses to refund the difference between any overcharged amount and the correct price of the item.”

It comes just days after a similar ticketing error was shared online regarding a Schick Quattro razor set.

The retail giant said a price increase on an item featuring a yellow “special” tag was simply a “ticketing mistake” after a customer posted about it on Facebook, sparking fury among shoppers.

The woman shared two photos of the Schick Quattro razor blades taken in an unidentified Coles store.

In one photo, the “special” price shown on the yellow and red sticker was $10.80, while the original price underneath was $10 and the barcode had been crossed out in pink highlighter.

“This is why I shop at Aldi. No hidden catch with Aldi specials,” the shopper stated.

Her post quickly sparked anger among shoppers, with many believing Coles had attempted to “dupe” them into paying more.

But Coles stepped in to reassure customers, stating it was simply down to a staff member making a mistake
