THE creator of the Gold Coast’s best coffee will open a second cafe on Boxing Day … and will be pouring free brews all day to celebrate.
Brodie Green, who operates James Street hole-in-the-wall Seadog, collaborated with Burleigh Heads Bowls Club to bring the local love back to the Gold Coast’s village suburb after a number of locally owned cafes closed.
“We’ve recently lost Easy Tiger (which is moving to Currumbin), Stones Throw (which relocated to Currumbin Waters), Be Somewhere, Globe Cafe and The Coffee Club,” he said.
“Gone are the days when we reach out to the big companies – right now we really need to support small local businesses that might be struggling.
“I live in Burleigh and always walk through (Memorial) park and think it would be an amazing opportunity.

“I’ve been talking to Burleigh Bowls Club for two and a half years about activating this area, but the pandemic has encouraged all of us to think outside the box so it was time to revisit the idea.”
Mr Green described the new Seadog in the Park as an “open-air cafe” with a coffee cart, Basil Bangs umbrellas and a cabinet crammed with baked goodies.
In the original Seadog style, a takeaway trade will operate “over the fence” but club members can also enjoy their brews on picnic tables from handmade mugs.
“A third option is that people can grab a picnic blanket and chill out in the park – we’ll give them a table number and bring their order over to them,” he said.
“I’ve found people really want to be enjoying the outdoors since COVID, not cramped inside a cafe.”
While there are no strings attached when claiming a free Boxing Day brew, Mr Green said he’d love it if customers could support Gold Coast businesses and charities by buying a raffle ticket.
“We’ll be going around to local restaurants, cafes, butchers, florists and buying vouchers to raffle off with all of the money raised going to local charities,” he said.
Earlier this year Seadog on James Street was voted by Gold Coast Bulletin readers as the home of the city’s best coffee.
