Every reason the daring ‘hip split’ trend needs to disappear

A risky new fashion trend that makes it impossible to wear undies is sweeping Instagram – but it’s the daring “hip split” that needs to disappear.

'Ridiculous' detail in cut-out dress roasted

Women get a rough ride.

Us gals are paid less than male counterparts, we’re also the person in relationships most likely to take care of household chores — and of course, who could forget the treat that is our monthly menstrual cycle.

But being a woman in 2021 also means confronting many skimpy clothing trends, each more ridiculous than the last.

I’m talking outfits you can’t walk in because they’re too tight, itsy-bitsy bikinis you’d lose in an instant if a wave crashed over you at Bondi – or in the most recent case, hip splits that should come with a warning.

Sure, the seriously skimpy design looks incredible in the Instagram photos all over our feeds, but it leaves us with many questions, mainly: WHY?

Here are all the alarming thoughts most people have when they first sight a hip split, and the equally eyebrow-raising answers.

Can you wear undies?

In short, underwear is a bit of problem, so the easiest solution is to remove it from the equation.

With one leg completely on show up to the waist and the skirt’s fabric draping between the wearer’s other leg, there’s nowhere to hide even the smallest G-string.

Not even a trusty flesh coloured pair of undies is going to save you because let’s face it, you can still see them and anyone wearing a dress or skirt with a split that high definitely doesn’t want a pair of knickers ruining their “vibe”.

One follower of former MAFS contestant turned influencer Jessika Power asked the 29-year-old how exactly she got around the underwear situation, but she’s yet to respond.

So I can only presume underwear is a no-go which is something my mother, who always warned me to wear nice undies in case I got hit by a bus, would undoubtedly recoil at.

But hey, at least it means ambos wouldn’t have to cut them off, so that’s a win mum.

Am I going to flash my vagina?

This was my next thought too. No undies = exposed genitals – and that is definitely bad news.

Gold Coast influencer Tahlia Skaines appears to have decided the risk was worth it, wearing a black cut-out dress with a hip split to her birthday on the weekend.

While many commenters praised her daring outfit, some had thoughts, just like me.

“Wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen,” one wrote.

One user suggested she only wore the outfit “for the ‘gram” however Tahlia shared another snap rocking the outfit in a bar.

Did she manage it without flashing her lady parts? Logic suggests not.

Could I wear a hip split skirt in real life?

The great thing about fashion is you can experiment and have fun with your outfits.

If you’re keen to give this daring trend a crack (pun intended), just be prepared to flash your bits when you step outside. I mean, all it takes is a gust of wind...

However, if you’re like me the whole “look” just leaves you feeling like once again, women are being done dirty

After all, the whole design has as much practicality as an upside down bikini in a snowstorm and it has the distinct whiff of being the fashionary masterpiece of a horny middle-aged man.

So please, someone take that pencil off him, and leave our wardrobes alone.
