Newly-announced Victoria Racing Club ambassador Christian Wilkins has stolen the show yet again in a figure-hugging red dress at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse.

The 27-year-old social scene favourite donned the look at a promo event for Myer’s Fashions on the Field on Sunday, pairing his one-shoulder Norma Kamali dress with a black hat from Melissa Jackson Millinery and platform YSL boots.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the department store’s annual spring racing style competition – made extra special with the VRC’s recent announcement it was ditching gendered categories.

The Women’s and Men’s Racewear categories will instead be the Best Dressed and Best Suited Awards, with all genders encouraged to enter either category based on their own personal style.

A Best Dressed and Best Suited racewear winner will be selected on Penfolds Victoria Derby Day, Lexus Melbourne Cup Day and Kennedy Oaks Day, going straight into the national final alongside a number of Australian states and territories and New Zealand finalists.

The overall winner will be announced at the Kennedy Oaks Day on November 3.

After a three-year hiatus from the track – thanks to a certain global pandemic – VRC chairman Neil Wilson said the new chapter in fashions aimed to invigorate the time-honoured competition while increasing its inclusivity and reach.

“In celebration of Myer Fashions on the Field’s 60th anniversary and its return to Flemington, we are ensuring that our fashion story drives equality, inclusion and individuality as we set course for the next 60 years,” he said.

“We proudly embrace the notion that fashion and style are an expression of individual creativity and believe this should be reflected in the international event.”

Christian, who is the son of veteran TV personality Richard Wilkins, said he “couldn’t love [the VRC’s new approach] more”.

“Any fashion insider will tell you that the future of fashion is fluidity,” he said.

“It’s so exciting to see Myer Fashions on the Field leading that trend here in Australia.

“Plus generally creating an accepting, non-judgemental space for all people to express themselves is amazing.”

Christian’s latest showstopping appearance comes after he revealed on the SBS’s Insight last month that he’d “received, without any exaggeration, thousands of trolling comments” after walking the Logies red carpet in a dress.

“People telling me to [overdose], people telling me that I’m a disgrace,” he told the program.

“I mean, I was very surprised to find out that the patriarchy was so flimsy that it could be taken down by a piece of white silk.”

The model and former Dancing With The Stars contestant added that he wasn’t prepared for that level of backlash.

“To be completely honest, I was actually really shocked at what my alleged crime was compared to what the response was,” he said.

“I’m not leading the Stonewall riots, I wore a white dress to the Logies. Like, come on.”
