So what do you buy for the people who don’t expect much, or anything at all?
According to Scentre Group’s Jacqui Waine, sentimental gifting and heartfelt gestures such as engraved jewellery and picture frames are ideal.
“Puzzles, art supplies, gardening tools and Kindles are also proving popular,” she says.
Phil Bishop, chief executive of The Reject Shop, agrees.
“We expect to see photo frames top of the gift list, along with the classic and much-loved Darrell Lea Rocklea Road chocolate to accompany,” he says.
Big W spokeswoman Amanda Lunn says headphones and smartwatches are trending.
“They are perfect for those keeping active as we approach the warmer months,” she says.
“DIY and creative gifts such as the Craft Maker knitting and macrame kits are also favourites as they provide an opportunity for the family to come together and enjoy quality time.
“There are more classic gifting options like our new release fiction books or the Openook wine decanter for entertaining family and friends at home over the festive season.”
Nisha Nigam and her husband Anant Kumar Nigam say the gift of spending time with loved ones is crucial this Christmas.
“Simply making arts and crafts or reading with our grandchildren is the perfect gift and way to enjoy time together,” Nigam says.
“We often don’t know what we need when it comes to more technical gifts, so headphones or smart devices are also a great option.”

MEANINGFUL GIFTS FOR MUM
Mothers are no doubt our No.1 fans but many of us still struggle with what to get for the significant maternal figure or figures in our lives.

“It’s an easy, no-fuss gift,” Smith says.

“Beauty products also give mum the opportunity to treat herself, which every mum deserves at this time of year.”
According to Scentre Group’s Jacqui Waine, finding the perfect gift for mum is a fine art.
“Our Westfield research tells us that customers have three main considerations: Meaningful (76 per cent), a special treat (68 per cent) and practical (63 per cent),” she says.
“As a result, traditional gifts such as beauty products, pamper kits and lifestyle apparel are proving popular choices this year, in addition to gifts with a sentimental element like engraving or monogramming, photo books and personalised jewellery.”
Sophie Onikul of eBay Australia says customers can score new, refurbished and preloved gifts at various price points, from $20 beauty tools, to a $600 Dyson Supersonic hair dryer.
“For mums who like a touch of luxury, the popular silk pillowcases are great to minimise those bad hair days and the UGG slippers let mum relax around the Christmas tree in style,” she says.
“The Royal Albert teapot, based on a classic design from the 1930s, is a great gift idea for Mums who are lovers of all things vintage.”
Maria Khouri is hoping to receive a gift for her home.
“Anything that will fill the home with warmth and love,” the Melbourne mum says.
