GOLD Coast’s best fish and chips shop now has the title to go with the star power.
Red Hot Cod at Burleigh has been voted the home of Gold Coast’s best fish and chips, a powerful selling point for the family-run business.
The Gold Coast Highway shop attracted almost 15 per cent of the votes from Bulletin readers, with Mudgeeraba Seafoods on School Street and Chevron Island Seafoods finishing second and third respectively.
Four years after opening, Red Hot Cod – a nod to owner Simon Scott’s previous business of Red Hot Wok – has quickly gained a reputation for its fresh, local seafood.
That quality has brought with it star power.
“It’s great that people have recognised what we do,” Mr Scott said.
“We have got entry-level fish and chips for $5 but you can also buy $35 worth and get something special.
“It’s pretty common for us to have rock stars and surfing world champions or State of Origin players in here, and the next table over will be some pensioners.”
Red Hot Cod’s team of about 20 employees also prides itself on one key ingredient.
“We are fast too,” Mr Scott said.
And the best item on the menu?
“We sell chips, not fries,” Mr Scott said.
“They are not skinny fries but proper potato chips.”
Mr Scott said his 30 years of training alongside leading chefs helped his team survive and thrive despite the business being reduced to takeaway orders only during the peak of COVID.
