IT’S not every day you find yourself at war with a pod of dolphins for a sushi lunch,
but that’s exactly what happened to Nicholas Smith last Friday.
The tree lopper was 70 metres from shore on his morning surf at Duranbah when he
was surrounded by ten dolphins preying on a school of mackerel tuna.
“I reached into the water and grabbed a tuna by its tail with my bare hands, it
must’ve weighed about eight kilos,” he said.
“The dolphins tried to get the fish off me, making the other surfers think it was a
shark attack.’

“I kept a good hold of the tuna and held it up for the surfers to see, they couldn’t
believe it.”
After fending off the dolphins, he caught a wave back to shore with the tuna on
board.
“Everyone on the beach found what I did incredibly amazing,” he said.
After snapping a photo with his prize, he threw the fish into the tray of his ute.
“When I got home, I carved it up and ate it as sashimi with chilli and olive oil — it
tasted beautiful.”

This wasn’t the first time the surfer had snagged a fish without a rod, considering
“hand fishing” his special talent.
“I’ve never heard of anyone else who’s ever done that.”
When he’s not surfing, Mr Smith and nephew Jaiden Maclean can be found drone
fishing, with a YouTube video of a 24kg tuna they caught getting four million views.
Mr Smith said he would back to try his luck at Duranbah this weekend.
