WATER users are being urged to slow down as new speed regulations are introduced in the city’s north this weekend.
A speed limit has been set for the Coomera area between Sanctuary Cove and the entrance into the Broadwater near Paradise Point.
The speed limit is set at up to 30 knots for vessels less than 6.5m and up to 6 knots for vessels 6.5m and over.

The limit was decided after Gold Coast Waterways Authorities (GCWA) trialled the selected area for more than 12 months, originally trialling the speed for 40 knots.

“This presented us with some real challenges and complexities in making a decision on speed that address the differences of opinion expressed during the trial.
“They’re all valid points. We’ve listened and taken that feedback into account, as well as information gathered in the trial, to reach a compromise on speed limits in this section of the river.”
If waterway users are caught disobeying the new limits they can be slapped with a fine of between $266.90 to $400.35 if they are caught disobeying the new rules.
Signage will be introduced this weekend.
