OPERATORS of the recently closed restaurant Allure on Currumbin have hit back at a customer demanding a refund on an unused gift voucher.

A spokesperson for the once-popular restaurant said they were trying to “devise scenarios where everything is resolved happily, but as always there have been a few who have sprayed vitriol before knowing any proposed outcome”.

The response came after the Bulletin contacted the restaurant three weeks ago inquiring about a voucher that had not been refunded to a northern NSW couple, despite their attempts to contact the restaurant.

They still haven’t been reimbursed, however received an email earlier this week saying “we will inform you more when there is more to advise.”

Kim Bowra and his wife had received a $150 gift voucher from his sister to spend at the restaurant to celebrate an upcoming anniversary.

His sister bought the voucher on January 15 via email before following up nine days later because it had not been issued.

The voucher was issued the following day on January 25. But six days later, the restaurant abruptly closed.

“My wife had wanted to go there for some time and $150 is no small amount of money. We were going to splurge,” Mr Bowra told the Bulletin.

“So we’re pretty disappointed. We wanted to book in and read they were permanently closed.”

Mr Bowra said he tried calling a number provided on the website, but the voicemail was “full’’ and would not record any more messages.

An email to the restaurant sent more than a week ago had also gone unanswered.

“We just want a basic refund,” he said.

“We would have liked to see them be a little more upfront. It would have been nice.”

A spokesperson for the restaurant said the sudden closure was due to a third party backing out of the eatery, meaning they could not trade legally without them.

“Allure on Currumbin (would have been) trading in an insolvent state, which is illegal, unless being supported by a third party,” the spokesperson said.

“This was what was occurring at AoC, which is very common in many businesses.

“Our third party withdrew its support very unexpectedly and suddenly on January 30, so we had no option but to immediately close, otherwise we would have been trading illegally.

“The company is now being wound up and as with any scenario such as this, it takes a while to sort out all the creditors and their demands on the funds.

“Gift voucher holders fall into this category.”

The spokesman said they were in the process of replying to people with unused gift vouchers.

People with unused gift vouchers could email accounts@allure.com.au.

Allure on Currumbin was once ranked second best in the country by TripAdvisor. It was taken over by 21-year-old chef Ryan Humphries last year.
