Adelaide radio ratings: Survey two 2023 results deliver a surprise

Cornflakes are spraying around kitchens in Adelaide radio stations after one brekky crew’s shock win – and another’s big loss – in the latest ratings survey.

There’s been a shock win in the latest radio ratings survey.
There’s been a shock win in the latest radio ratings survey.

It’s unheard of – an FM commercial station, namely, Triple M, is top of the breakfast pops in the latest radio ratings results.

But while no-one can say Triple M is the poor cousin, once all-conquering Aunty is down on her luck – ABC Adelaide’s brekky duo having also recorded what can only be described as a disappointing result.

Heard on the FM band, Triple M’s breakfast crew – Mark Ricciuto, Chris Dittmar and Laura O’Callaghan – have finished in the No. 1 spot with 14.2 share points, up 1.3 from last survey.

The result puts them ahead of AM talkback station FIVEaa’s David Penberthy and Will Goodings; that duo recorded 13.6, after a dip of 0.6.

Triple M’s result – a little over a year after O’Callaghan joined the Roo & Ditts show to make it Roo, Ditts & Loz – is particularly impressive.

That is because first and second place have been traditionally dominated by FIVEaa and the ABC, also on the AM band, who take turns at being in top spot.

Interestingly, Triple M recently raised eyebrows with an on-air promo that incorrectly claimed it had Adelaide’s No. 1 breakfast show.

That honour belonged to FIVEaa – until now, that is.

But back to this survey: In another shock result, SAFM’s Rebecca “Bec” Morse and Mark “Soda” Soderstrom finished in third place with 10.6, up 0.3, while Nova 919 and ABC Adelaide tied for fourth with 10.4.

Nova, which has two brekky shows in the timeslot – one hosted by Ben Harvey, Liam Stapleton and Belle Jackson and another by Jodie Oddy and Andrew Hayes – dropped by 1.3.

Meanwhile, the ABC’s Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz plummeted 2.1 share points.

Mix 102.3’s Ali Clarke Breakfast Show is in fifth spot with 9.7, despite a gain of 1.2.

That result would also be disappointing. Radio insiders say Ali Clarke and her crew – who recently recruited Andrew “Cosi” Costello – need to lift their ratings ASAP.

Back in the day Mix had the No. 1 brekky show – with Oddy and Soderstrom. Last survey, it was also the top station overall.

However, that title now belongs to Triple M, which jumped 1.3 share points to finish on 12.0. Mix recorded 11.9. It’s the tiniest of margins but, as they say in the classics, a win is a win.

The radio ratings results ladder is based on share points which are calculated by taking into account the number of people tuning in for at least eight minutes within a 15-minute timeslot, which is also known as “cume” or cumulative audience, and the time they spend listening. In terms of a cumulative audience (cume) Nova was the most popular in the breakfast timeslot with an audience of 185,000, followed by Mix on 176,000, SAFM on 168,000 and Triple M on 142,000.
