Will Smith is moving forward with his plans for a sequel of his post-apocalyptic hit I Am Legend.
It is understood I Am Legend 2 could be the actor’s his first project since the fallout of his actions at the Oscars earlier this year, where he stormed the stage and slapped fellow actor Chris Rock in the face.
Smith has since apologised for his outburst and also accepted a 10-year ban from the Academy Awards.
The movie, produced by Smith’s company Westbrook Studios, will see him reprise his role as Robert Neville, a scientist trying to find a cure and survive zombies in post-apocalyptic New York City.
The original film, co-staring Michael B Jordan, made more than $US585 million ($A 832,775,069) at the box office.
According to The Sun, sources said screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who adapted Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel for the original movie back in 2007, is including Smith’s character in the sequel.
“The script is being written mentioning his characters and as of yet, Will remains attached to the project,” a source told The Sun.
“The concept is still to be signed off by Warner Brothers but there has been no indication that Will is off the project.
“Obviously he is the producer of the film and his production company is in charge while the development continues.”
Other projects understood to be on ice since Smith’s Oscars slap scandal include Bad Boys 4 and Bright 2.
The release date of his other movie Emancipation, could be pushed back to next year.
Even though Smith is working, it could be some time before we see him on our screens again.
“Will himself is undergoing therapy and taking time away from the limelight,” the source said.
“It two years time things could look very different – and Will could return to the screen.”
Last month, Smith called himself a “coward” in Netflix interview with David Letterman.
In that same interview, which was filmed before this year’s Oscars, he revealed he had a psychedelic drug-fuelled vision his career would be “destroyed”.
Smith said he took ayahuasca, a psychoactive herbal drink that reportedly has hallucinogenic properties.
“Once you drink it, you’re going to see yourself in a way you’ve never seen yourself before,” Smith told Letterman.
“One of the experiences was the individual, most hellish psychological experience of my life.”
Smith went on to describe that in his vision his home, wealth and career would be torn from him for two years.
“I’m drinking, I’m sitting there, and then, all of the sudden, it’s like I start seeing all of my money flying away, and my house is flying away, and my career is gone away,” Smith said.
When he came to, Smith said he heard his daughter Willow calling out for his help.
