How do you get nominated for a Logie?

MEET the Channel 9 presenter determined to ensure her Logies reputation remains intact when TV’s night of nights moves to the Gold Coast in July.

Leila McKinnon prides herself on being “the last one to leave” the Logies’ after-after party each year.

This year’s ceremony, to be held at The Star Gold Coast, won’t be able to accommodate as many guests as its former Melbourne home.

“I think I’m in,” McKinnon said.

“I was talking to somebody and they were saying there would be a few shocks coming.

“I said ‘is this an awkward moment? If I’m out, just tell me. No pressure — but it is the one night a year I get to go out.’”

Gold Coast gets the Logies

McKinnon, 45, and her husband, former Channel 9 boss David Gyngell, parents to son Ted, 5, and Gwen, 3, are ‘living the dream’ after moving to a rural property near Mullumbimby in northern NSW, early last year.

“He’s really enjoying life,” McKinnon said of Gyngell.

“He’s got lots of projects. He’s on the Gold Coast quite a lot and he’s also part owner of the Brunswick Hotel — we went to trivia night there last night.”

GOLD COAST LOGIES LOCKED AND LOADED

McKinnon said the couple made a “stealth move” north from Sydney after buying a few acres in northern NSW a few years ago.

“We got a block of land and built a cabin and then we built a house and then moved there full-time 18 months ago,” she said.

“I’m commuting and I’ve got facilities to do a lot of voice work here. I’ve been doing it at home (in a sound studio). It’s a very amateurish one but with technology now, it’s good enough to do some stuff from here.”

McKinnon said she’ll attend the Logies solo — Gyngell, “doesn’t want to go anywhere anytime”.

“Even when he ran the network he didn’t want to go (to the Logies),” she said.

“I was thinking, I hope David doesn’t expect me to come home afterwards — I leave the dancefloor when the lights go out and the music is turned off. I watch the Today Show team do the show and then I go to bed.

“I’ll be able to walk around the corner to Mum’s (at Broadbeach Waters) this year but I’m still going to party like it’s 1999.”

McKinnon’s latest gig sees her co-host the two-part special Eat Well For Less, with chef Ben O’Donoghue, which premieres tonight at 7.30pm on Channel 9.

The special, which shows cash-strapped and time-poor Australians how to eat well for less by changing their shopping, cooking and eating habits, is loaded with insights into exactly what we put into our fridges, cupboards and mouths.
