“All of my friends had been telling me to do it for ages,” he said. “Because I had no experience, I kept putting it off. I was watching videos of The Voice in America and I thought I’m just going to do it.”

Mr Paulsen impressed all four judges — Boy George, Kelly Rowland, Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian — for singing an acoustic version of US pop star Ariana Grande’s Thank U Next.

“I didn’t expect it. I hadn’t performed much so getting up there was such a huge step for me. I would have been happy with just one chair turn. I wasn’t expecting four at all.”
He then had to choose who of the four judges would be his coach. He joined Sebastian’s team.

“I was really torn," Mr Paulsen said. “I had a feeling I wanted Guy (Sebastian) but when I was standing up there I was so unsure.
“Guy was more my style of music and I’ve always been a fan of him. He’s been on a show like this before (Australian Idol) so I felt he could put themselves in our shoes.”
He is now aiming to make it through the next round.
“I just want to go out and show people I want to be in this for the long run. It’s a passion of mine.”
Asked if his goal is to be a famed international artist he said: “Definitely. That would be hitting the lottery.”
