Emmy Awards 2022: Winners, Shocks & Best Moments

Australian actor Toni Collette, whose breakthrough role was in Muriel’s Wedding, has been nominated for a prestigious Emmy US TV award.

Fellow Aussies Sarah Snook and Murray Bartlett are also in the running for gongs.

And in other Aussie updates, it was also good news for Foxtel, with 139 Emmy nominations going to stars and shows featured on the network.

The Emmy Award nominations were announced in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, New York time. Comedian and Curb Your Enthusiasm actor JB Smoove hosted the telecast alongside Melissa Fumero who starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The Emmy Awards will air locally on Foxtel on Tuesday, September 13 at 10am AEST, with an encore screening at 8:30pm AEST.

Aussies nominated for Emmys

Squid Game, Stranger Things and Severance were among the high profile shows nominated for awards.

Overall however it was HBO’s Succession, the epic drama of the machinations swirling around the Logan clan, that swept the nominations claiming 25 overall.

South Australian Sarah Snook who plays patriarch Logan Roy’s scheming daughter Shiv is nominated in the best supporting drama actress category.

Soccer comedy Ted Lasso received 20 nominations with surprise hit The White Lotus, about the travails of guests and staff at a dysfunctional Hawaii hotel, also garnering 20.

Murray Bartlett, from Sydney, is rewarded with a nomination in the category for best supporting actor in a limited series for his acclaimed portrayal of troubled hotel manager Armond in The White Lotus.

Collette, who also starred in highly rated horror flick Hereditary, received a nod in the best actress in a limited series category for her role in The Staircase.

The drama series, which aired on Foxtel in Australia, is based on the 2001 death of Kathleen Peterson at the bottom of the staircase in her North Carolina home.

Her husband Michael was subsequently sent to prison for her murder. But this was later downgraded to a manslaughter charge and Michael was freed continuing to protest his innocence.

Colin Firth, who played Michael, was nominated in the best actor category.

Collette will have to triumph over Pam & Tommy’s Lily James and Impeachment’s Sarah Paulson to claim the Emmy. But if she does win at September’s ceremony it will be the second of her career after securing a Primetime Emmy in 2009 for her leading role in comedy series The United States of Tara.

Hyper violent Korean drama Squid Game, which millions globally gorged on as lockdowns hit, is up for best drama, as is fan favourite Stranger Things.

Succession, mafia drama Ozark and Pam & Tommy all received multiple nominations.
