2018 Met Gala: red hot on the red carpet

IT’S the biggest night in fashion - but with any costume party, there’s bound to be some frocky horror shows.

As usual people flocked to social media to mock stars’ outfits as they hit the Met Gala 2018 red carpet, The Sun reports.

This year’s theme for the fundraising event in New York was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”.

It was selected to pay tribute to the masterworks of religious art in the museum through the medium of fashion.

Naturally, when you’ve got celebrities dressing as the Pope (we’re looking at you, Rihanna) and sporting a fake tan that President Trump would be proud of, the memes came thick and fast.

Many likened Selena Gomez’s bronze glow to the US president, while others compared her to Ross from Friends and SpongeBob Squarepants.

Beyonce sparked a media storm when she announced she’d be giving the event a miss - four years after that moment when her sister Solange attacked her husband Jay-Z in a lift.

But one cheeky Twitter user suggested she had made an appearance after all - as the Holy Ghost.

Meanwhile RiRi’s “Pope” attire had many fans aspiring to convert to Catholicism.

Kim Kardashian put her killer curves on display in a striking gold Versace gown as she attended without husband Kanye West for the second year in a row.

Though one Twitter user compared her “heavenly body” to a bejewelled golden chalice.

Another mocked model Cindy Crawford for appearing to pay little homage to the theme - other than the “Heavenly Body” part.

And one pointed out actress Frances McDormand’s headpiece looked like she was promoting her new film: “Free Bluebirds Outside A-Big Museum”.

Pregnant American rapper Cardi B got a bit of stick for her elaborate head crown, which one person likened to the Starbucks logo.

Another suggested her look was a budget version of Beyonce’s striking gold Grammys 2017 outfit which showed off her growing baby bump.

They posted contrasting snaps of the two singers, writing: “When you order something online vs when it arrives.”

Another Twitter user made the same joke about Zendaya’s and Shailene Woodley’s Joan of Arc costumes.

Last night Jaden Smith was mocked after he brought his own gold disc onto the red carpet at the Met Gala.

These were the Met Gala 2018 red carpet’s cutest couples – from Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, to Gisele and Tom Brady.

And this is the reason Blake Lively’s Met Gala dress took more than 600 hours to make.
