Australian TV stars hope to keep TV Week Logies on Gold Coast for good

Some of the biggest names in television have revealed why they want the TV Week Logies to stay on the Gold Coast for good.

SOME of the biggest names in Australian TV want the TV Week Logies to stay on the Gold Coast because the city’s glitz, glamour and Meter Maids beach culture is a perfect fit.

The 2019 Logie award winners will be revealed next month in a celebrity-studded ceremony at The Star Gold Coast in Broadbeach as it was last year.

This will be TV Week’s 61st year of the Logies with the Gold Coast locked in until 2021 but after that it will be up for grabs again.

Previously it was at The Crown in Melbourne.

But Studio Ten’s Sarah Harris and Nine Today Show host Richard Wilkinson - who likened the Logies awards statue to a Gold Coast Meter Maid - both told the Bulletin they want to keep the event on the Gold Coast.

Ms Harris, a former Brisbane resident, said she wasn’t keen on it being moved from the Gold Coast when asked by the Bulletin.

“I’m a Queensland girl at heart. But I love the Gold Coast,” she said.

“The warm weather makes for a bit more of a party. It’s a chance to come up and enjoy the gorgeous weather, cut loose and have a bit of fun.

“I just think there is something glamorous about the Gold Coast... (from) the highrises (to the) Meter Maids.

“I think the Logies needs a bit of that. I mean, the award (statue) is practically a Meter Maid. An unusual Meter Maid but they are alike. The Gold Coast is all about the glamour.”

Mr Wilkinson reminisced on the celebrations last year and referred to the event being held on the Coast as its “spiritual home”.

“The Logies was always great at The Crown (in Melbourne) but we had a lovely time last year,” he said.

“I think coming to the Gold Coast has given the Logies a new feel. Plus, we all love coming here. It’s our favourite destination so to be able to come here for work is a bonus. Especially when it’s this warm in the middle of winter.”

Yesterday The Star Gold Coast was buzzing with excitement as dozens of television stars anticipated who made the cut for this year’s Logie nominations.

Cameron Merchant, Jules Robinson and Heidi Latcham from Married At First Sight, nominated for Best Reality TV Show, arrived together.

The nominees for the big award, the Gold Logie are: Ten’s The Project host Waleed Aly, ABC’s Hard Quiz host Tom Gleeson, Seven’s Sunrise host Sam Mac, Ten’s Neighbours actor Eve Morey, Ten’s Dancing With The Stars and The Living Room host Amanda Keller, Nine’s Doctor Doctor, actor Rodger Corser and ABC’s Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis. City of Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates and local MP Meaghan Scanlon arrived together.

Ms Gates said last year the Logies “showed off” what the Gold Coast has to offer from the hinterland to the coastal beaches.

“We have incredible memories from last year,” she said.

“Film and production has grown so much over the past 12 months. We greatly value our relationship with TV Week Logies.”
