Queensland’s film and television industry is set to shine at the 2025 AACTA Awards, with a record-breaking wave of locally produced and filmed content sweeping the nominations.
The prestigious event, known as the “Aussie Oscars,” returns to the Gold Coast in February 2025.

Leading the charge is Brisbane-based Netflix miniseries Boy Swallows Universe, the Netflix adaptation of Trent Dalton’s beloved Brisbane-set novel.
Filmed entirely in Brisbane, the series has made history, scoring a record-breaking 22 nominations — the most ever for a single production in AACTA history.
The critically acclaimed show is in the running for Best Miniseries and boasts eight acting nods, including emerging stars Zac Burgess and Felix Cameron for Best Lead Actor in a Drama.
Hot on its heels, BINGE’s feature film debut How to Make Gravy, shot on the Gold Coast, locked in 15 nominations, tying with George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Among Furiosa’s standout achievements, Hollywood stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are up for Best Lead Actress in film and Best Supporting Actor in Film respectively.
The Outback-set political drama Total Control, filmed partly in Winton and starring Mount Isa’s Deborah Mailman, secured five nominations, with Mailman vying for a Best Lead Actress award.
Meanwhile, the much-loved Bluey, produced by Brisbane-based Ludo Studio, picked up three nods, including Best Children’s Program.
The animated series has become a global phenomenon, continuing its winning streak after last year’s triumph in the same category.
Queensland’s comedic prowess was also recognised, with Brisbane comedian Mel Buttle picking up a nod for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special.
Winners of the 2025 AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel Group will be revealed across two ceremonies at the Gold Coast’s HOTA — an Industry Gala on February 5 and the main Awards Ceremony on February 7.
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said the state’s film and television community was thrilled to again host the AACTA Awards and welcome the nation’s biggest stars back to the Sunshine State — especially following the spectacular Queensland debut earlier this year, which attracted movie stars like Margot Robbie, Rebel Wilson, and Cate Blanchett.
“The AACTA Awards nominees highlight the depth of talent and diversity of storytelling right across Australia’s screen sector,” Ms Feeney said.
“It’s been a remarkable year for homegrown stories and Screen Queensland looks forward to welcoming the industry to the sunshine state for the second AACTA Awards and Festival in February.”
