CAMERAS have begun rolling on Aquaman’s location shoot at Hastings Point — under the cover of darkness.
Director James Wan took to Instagram late yesterday to announce the blockbuster movie’s northern NSW shoot had started, before filming at the Amnesty Bay lighthouse and keeper’s cottage set at Hastings Point continued into the night.
“Finally filming at the lighthouse set. Beautiful location. Saw whales breaching in the distance. Magical,” he captioned a picture of the set in a post on Instagram before getting down to work.

Fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the film’s lead actors — Jason Momoa, who stars as Arthur Curry, aka gilled superhero Aquaman, and Amber Heard, who plays his love interest Mera — during the shoot will be disappointed.
The Curry Lighthouse scenes feature Aquaman’s lighthouse keeper dad Tom Curry, the character played by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison.
Nicole Kidman, who plays Aquaman’s mother Queen Atlanna, will not be involved in the Hastings Shoot.
ELON AND AMBER REUNITE ON GOLD COAST
Film crew have spent weeks installing the Curry Lighthouse set on Yugari Drive at the top of Hastings Point headland, a popular whale-watching spot.
Large sections of the set were built in a warehouse at Murwillumbah and transported to the headland to be assembled.
As realistic as the Curry Lighthouse and cottage are, the top of the buildings will be added in post production via CGI.
Aquaman director Wan says he’s trying to avoid using CGI on the film as much as possible.
“That just makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this,” he says in an interview with Heat Vision.
“So it’s not an easy shoot — but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”
Wan says the fact most of the film is set underwater has complicated things.
“It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on,” he says.
“Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences, are very complex.
“Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated. You have to think about CG with the hair and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff.”
Aquaman is slated for release December, 2018.
